Success Spotlight: Brenda’s Comeback Journey

Brenda Williams, a beloved long-term resident of Huntington Court, is living proof that resilience, determination, and support can change everything.

Just a few months ago, Brenda was under hospice care, battling severe complications from COPD. She was bedbound, rarely eating, and reliant on high levels of oxygen 24/7. Things looked bleak—but neither Brenda nor the Huntington Court team gave up. Slowly but surely, she began to improve. Her strength returned little by little, and before long, she made the bold decision to discontinue hospice and begin therapy.

Brenda set ambitious goals: she wanted to walk again using her walker and regain full use of her custom motorized wheelchair. In April, she began working with our occupational and physical therapy teams—and hasn’t looked back since.



With occupational therapy, Brenda focused on increasing her independence with grooming, dressing, toileting, and mastering the controls of her wheelchair. She worked tirelessly and was successfully discharged from OT, having met her goals. Her journey with physical therapy has been equally inspiring. From rebuilding leg strength and practicing transfers, to standing and walking again—Brenda has amazed her care team. Today, she is walking over 100 feet with a walker and without supplemental oxygen. Her COPD symptoms have significantly improved, and she continues with PT to reach her next milestone.

But Brenda didn’t stop there. On her birthday in May, she made another life-changing choice—to quit smoking. After decades, she’s now over a month smoke-free and breathing better than ever. Her determination, paired with encouragement from her sister Trish, sparked a new vision: to continue progressing and eventually transition to Assisted Living or even back into the community.

To celebrate her incredible recovery, both physically and personally, the therapy team threw Brenda a party in her honor. Her journey is a powerful reminder that life doesn’t stop in long-term care—sometimes, it’s just the beginning of an amazing comeback. We are so proud of you, Brenda.
