Therapy Success Story: Tamera

Just as Tamera was beginning an exciting new phase of life—retirement—she was blindsided by a series of serious medical crises. After suffering a fall at home, she was admitted to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with pleural effusion, double pneumonia, sepsis, and respiratory failure. Tamera spent three difficult weeks in the hospital, where she was intubated and received nutrition through a feeding tube.

When she was admitted to the Residence at Huntington Court, Tamera was physically debilitated. She was unable to swallow, walk, or dress herself. With determination and the support of our therapy team, she began an intensive rehabilitation program that included occupational, physical, and speech therapy to address her mobility, daily living skills, and swallowing needs.



Throughout her stay, Tamera demonstrated remarkable motivation and focus. She worked diligently with her therapists, actively participated in her care plan, and steadily gained strength and independence. Before long, she was walking with a rollator, feeding herself, and independently completing tasks like bathing and dressing. From an occupational therapy standpoint, she discharged at a modified independent level for both ADLs and IADLs—an incredible achievement in just three weeks. She successfully met all her therapy goals across OT, PT, and ST.

Beyond therapy, Tamera took full advantage of the social opportunities at Huntington Court. She was a regular at activities like bingo, games, and nail care, and quickly became a familiar face around the building—staying as active socially as she was in therapy! Tamera shared that she couldn’t say enough positive things about the staff and fellow residents at Huntington Court. She described everyone as kind and supportive, making her feel truly cared for throughout her stay. This experience, she says, has given her a new lease on life. She has quit smoking and plans to maintain a walking routine once she returns home.

Tamera is excited to reunite with her loving family but says Huntington Court felt like a second home during her recovery. We are incredibly proud of all she has accomplished and honored to have been part of her journey.
